The mountain roads

Two ways up the hill

2 hrsFrom Los Angeles

There are two routes from Los Angeles. I-10 to Highway 243 at Banning ends with a dramatic climb up the mountain, with sweeping views and switchbacks to match. Alternatively, Highway 60 to Highway 74 to Highway 243 goes through Hemet and includes a gentler climb. Both routes take about the same amount of time.

2 hrsFrom San Diego

There are two routes from San Diego. Both start on I-15 North. The more scenic route skirts the southern edge of the mountain on Highways 79 and 371 before joining Highway 74 just a few miles from town. The northern route continues up I-15 to I-215 before cutting across to Highway 74 for the rolling climb up the hill.

1 hrFrom Palm Springs

While you can hike to the top of the Palm Springs tramway from Idyllwild, to drive you’ll need to go around. Like the drive from Los Angeles, take Highway 243 straight up the hill from Banning, or Highway 74 for a gentler climb.
